Fiddlers Green Aircraft Models
117 Great Little Models CD-ROM

by Bob Pearson

Are you stuck in the midst of that never-ending project that just grows and grows? You know the one that has you digging through every piece of literature you own to find the exact colour of the pilot's socks on the morning of the day before he ...... well fret no more, take an hour or two off and build something for fun.

Chip Fyn and Fiddlers Green offer just that .. for many years now Fiddlers Green has offered card models of various aircraft and building for sale at airshows and via mailorder in magazines (I first found them at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome). Originally these were on postcard sized card stock now they can be found in electronic form and are available both from the Fiddlers Green website and on CD-ROM. These may be downloaded and then printed out on card stock and built over and over as your heart desires. The Adobe Acrobat reader is required to read these. I previously had v.2 and had to upgrade to v.4 to view the buildings.

The website is worth a visit and includes free samples from the following categories .. WW1 aircraft, civilian aircraft, buildings. ... and a cool shark that has a moving mouth. This can be a project for that young'un to do along with mom or dad (or the babysitter).

The Aircraft CD has 117 designs including the prewar Bleriot and Taube; 15 different Fokker Triplanes in various colour schemes ranginf from that old standby - Red Baron red to an overal black one witha fire-breathing devil on the fuselage, a Gotha bomber (in multiple sheets). WW2 aircraft range from a six sheet B-24, a two sheet P-38, Spitfire, Corsair, various Messerschmidt designs, Mustang, Hurricane, Zero .. all the old favourites. Proceeding on to postwar and modern we find the MiG-15, Tornado, F-14 . . . as well as civil designs like the Cessna, Ercoupe.

So far the only one I have built from the CD is a scale model of a sailplane that is built to fly ... and fly it does. And when it finally met its match with a power line and suffered a crumpled wing. . it is easy to trash and print another one.

Besides the aircraft, the CD contains plans for two different styles of stands to display your creations as well as prop discs to show them in flight.

Fiddlers Green also has two lines of buildings available. An English village and a Western town. I have the Western set and these are very charming and are designed for sprucing up a model railroad layout. And as such are available in the popular HO, N and Z scales. These show all the structures one would expect in Smalltown USA .. polite society will visit the bank and general store, while the lower denizens may frequent the saloon or Miss Rosa May's establishment which lies on the beaten path behind the others - yes there is even scale groundwork for the town.

Each design has at least one page of printed plans that you are required to cut out and glue together. All parts are in full colour and are shaded to represent various details. A second page gives instructions on building each model. When done you can't help but sit back and grin . . take a break, spend an evening and have some fun.
