Plastic Ship Modeller No 20 (Vol 5 No 4) Editor/Publisher - Dan Jones P.O Box 2183 Arvada, Co 80001-2183 USA Well, the latest Plastic Ship Modeller (PSM) has just arrived and is another outstanding issue. For those of you who may not have seen this magazine, it is put out every quarter and is in A4 format with approx 46 pages per issue. Whilst it may not be as "flashy" as the commercial magazines like FSM, SMI, etc, the quality of the writing is excellent and the drawings are pretty damm good as well. I have a complete collection dating back to the trial issue of Plastic Model Ships - which Dan changed to PSM Anyway, onto this issue. It contains the following articles: -
Part 3 of the 27C Essex conversion by Ray Bean - This is the final part of converting the 1/700 Jim Shirley kit and deals with the kit's planes and how to detail them. -
Photo Feature and article on the IJN Chitose/Chiyoda seaplane tenders by Dan Jones. This details their service and refers back to the Aoshima 1/700 kit. The photos are very good and give details of the platform and its support. -
Iron Shipwrights 1/350 USS Detroit CL-8 review by Dave Judy. -
The Russian protected cruiser Askold by Falk Pletscher. This is a very informative article on the service on the Askold and will help those who have bought either WEMs or WSWs 1/700 kit. It has some nice shots of Falk's build of the WSW kit. -
Mike Cooper's 1/700 scratchbuild of the Merchant Aircraft Carrier MV Empire MacAlpine. This is an excellent article and is highly recommended, especially his aircraft, which are done using Aoshima planes as a basis. -
SS Scot by Dan Jones. This article details the history of the SS Scot with some very nice drawings. -
Convoy to Russia - a diorama by Chris Drage. This once again shows the talent of Chris has in putting his 1/700 ships into a diorama and telling a story. This one consists of the following ships: Toms Modelworks Liberty Ship, Skywave's USS Bogue as HMS Tracker and three WEM Flower class corvettes. On top of all this, Dan has his usual reviews of plastic kits, resin kits & etched brass sets. Also feedback, book reviews and the Biblophile section -which deals with ship modelling books this time around. There is also Paul Jacobs' One to One Hundred column for 1/1250 modellers and Ray Bean's NAVINFOTEL column dealing with what's happening around the world with real ships. So in conclusion, another fine issue by Dan, with no real complaints from my end. Off course I can't comment on the reviews, since I don't have the kits, but in the past, Dan's reviews have been generally correct and I personally have had no real complaints with any issue.
