Revell '56 Chevrolet Del Ray

By Al Superczynski

Overview

One of the greatest ironies of the automotive world is the fact that everyday "grocery getters" that were considered plain Janes back in their day have now become some of the most desirable autos on the nostalgia scene. Chevrolet sold over 56,000 Del Ray coupes but most of them are long gone now, remaining examples hunted down by customizers and race enthusiasts alike. Still, thanks to car collectors and restorers, more and more of these beauties are surfacing at shows across the USA.

The Kit

Based on Revell's popular '56 Nomad kit this one has all the new parts necessary to build an authentic and detailed base model Del Ray coupe. Revell has also taken the opportunity to correct the too-long front valence panel so this part could be used as a pattern to correct the corresponding piece in their Nomad, which in turn can provide full wheel covers for the coupe instead of the dog dish hubcaps included in the kit. There are no optional parts in this kit but with a little swapping, or a dip into the parts box, it would be simple to make a custom, street machine, or drag race version. All-in-all this is a welcome variation of the still excellent original tooling. Dare we hope that a convertible will be next?

Our thanks to Revell-Monogram for the review sample.
