Felixstowe F.2A/F.3 in profile

by Bob Pearson

In the summer and fall of 1918 many aircrew took to painting their flying boats in 'dazzle' markings. The purpose of which was not to hide, but rather to make themselves as visible as possible to friends in a fight or when downed at sea. Those shown here are in red, white, blue and PC10.

  • Cross and Cockade (GB) 21/4

  • Windsock 7/2

  • Stuart Leslie of the JM Bruce/ GS Leslie Archives provided me with many photos

  • Les Rogers also did so durng the preparation of the Schiffer book on British WWI Aircraft and Squadron Markings, in which these, as well as other Felixstowe and Curtiss boats appear

Since doing these profiles, Albatros has published a Datafile on the type, which is highly recommended for anyone interested in WWI Flying boats. Additionally, more of my Felixstowe illustrations appear in the 18/4 issue of Windsock magazine as well as many of my older watercolours can be found on Colours and Markings of the World's Air Forces 1912-1920
