| PELELIU 1944 THE FORGOTTEN CORNER OF HELL by Jim Moran & Gordon L Rottman, illustrated by Howard Gerrard Osprey Publishing Ltd, ISBN 1-84176-512-0, 96 pages Reviewed by John Prigent | | This is a very readable account of the Peleliu landings and the fighting for the Palau archipelago. The maps and bird’s-eye views make the sequence of events clear, from the initial confusion of the assault landings to the official end of fighting. Needless to say there were Japanese soldiers holed up for years afterwards, the last surrender being in 1947, but it isn’t often realised that there was actually a Japanese landing on Peleliu in January 1945! A good selection of photographs includes tanks and LVTs, though anyone looking for photo reference on these should check the book to make sure it has what they want since it isn’t intended as a modellers’ reference. What it is, is a first-rate reference to this particular battle. Recommended. | |
