Walrus - January 2002 - Jim Schubert

Several readers e-mailed to tell me there is a third Walrus being restored by the RAAF Museum at Point Cook in Australia.  The museum's web-site has several photos of the restoration in process.  One puzzle for me is that the serial is given as HD874.  According to the Profile Publication on the Walrus the Supermarine s/n's all started with K, L, P or R and Saro's with W or X.  So, where does the HD come from?  Can any reader expunge my ignorance on this point?

One corespondent mentioned hearing of a Walrus fuselage recovered by an individual in the UK with the intention of restoring it.  Does anybody have any hard facts on this one?

Also, following appearance of my Walrus review, I was given a CD of the walkaround photos made by Colin Norwood of the Fleet Air Arm Museum's Walrus.  These photos may be seen at www.yahoogroups.com; when you get there select:  Hobbies & Crafts, Antiques, Collecting, Models.  Then select:  Aircraft.  Then select:  ACWALK and join the group.

V-173 - October 2001 - Jim Schubert

In my First Look review in October 2001 I listed a "Wings/Airpower", issue unknown as a reference.  I learned from an article in the February 2002 issue of "Wings" that it is in fact the "Airpower" of March 1987.  This information is included in  the editor's introduction to Gregory Pearson's article "Vought's Flying Disc".  The article is a brief history of the V-173 and XF5U-1 with a good spread of photos including two in color of the V-173.

X-4 Bantam - January 2001 - Jim Schubert

The February 2002 issue of "Flight Journal" magazine has a really fine first-person article on the X-4 by Northrop test pilot Charles Tucker.  The 12 black and white and two color photos, along with a good three-view drawing,  are of great value to modelers.
