The Nurnberg Hobby Fair may be less known to the common public, due to the fact that it is a closed trade event for traders only and the public has only limited access. At the Spielwarenmesse one can see the newest trends that concern all possible ways of hobby and free-time. The modeling exhibition is located in Hall 7, just one out of 15 large halls of the fair). The event however marks a kind of the Modeller's New Year. This is the place and the time, when all the recent and coming releases are presented by world's leading modeling companies, in some cases the security is even tighter than at international car exhibitions (e.g. 'Please, Sir, no photo new items' on the stand of one of the largest Japanese companies).
The trends that were visible in the previous years, have become more and more widespread. Producers showed EXTREME reluctance when asked about the coming new releases of this year. An extreme tension was almost visible, mostly on the stands of Japanese companies - the continuing crisis on the Japanese market has an influence also on the modelling industry, large companies like Tamiya or Hasegawa tend to release same models in the same scale almost simultaneously and are most eager to withhold the information until the very last moment before the release of the new kit. Last but not least, although we got used to the very economical dealing with new catalogues by the companies, catalogues and other printed materials were often available only for more important trade visitors.

This year's fair was also different in some points. The recession in the modeling industry is becoming more and more visible, even the largest companies have announced just a few new models this year - it seems that such giants like Revell, Italeri or Tamiya can not afford more than 3-4 new toolings yearly. On the other hand, there is a remarkable development in the sector of short-run plastic and resin kits, mostly from Eastern Europe. I suppose that this trend will continue in the coming years. These products are designed for the more sophisticated modeler who is ready to pay vaste amounts of money for multimedia kits of excellent quality, containing finely cast plastic, resin and white metal parts, combined with photoetched details and fine decals.
Enough words, this report should show only briefly, what the modellers' society can expect this year.
