Owl Decal's 1/48 Nachtjägers

By Chris Banyai-Riepl

This new company on the decal scene is providing some interesting decals for nightfighters, with their first sheet focusing on Luftwaffe aircraft. Four different planes are provided on this sheet, including a Bf 109, a Bf 110, a He 219 and a Junkers Ju 88. The sheet appears to be well researched and includes all the extra bits such as crosses and swastikas.

Starting with the Bf 110, this was a Bf 110E-1 of Stab./NJG 1, during February 1942. This plane was flown by Major Wolfgang Falck and at this time had seven day victories, as seen by the markings on the tail. This plane is overall black and coded G9+GA.

The Heinkel He 219A-0/R6 was from 2./NJG 1 in April 1944. This plane is finished in the standard RLM 76 with RLM 75 spots on the top, but is unique in that the lower right wing is painted black. Coded G9+FK, this plane was flown by Hauptmann Ernst-Wilhelm Modrow, who shot down 25 aircraft with this plane in three months.

The Bf 109G-6 was from 1./JG 300 during the summer of 1944. It has two different numbers on it, one black 18 and the other white 2, and has its standard 74/75/76 camouflage modified with a black belly. It was flown by Unteroffizier Hermann Berdelmann, who had two day victories.

Finally, the Junkers Ju 88G-1 was from 2./NJG 2 in August of 1944. Flown by Leutnant Johannes Strassner and coded 4R+AK, this plane had an experimental mounting of a MG151/20 in front of the cabin at an oblique angle.

The decals are well printed by Tally Ho! and have excellent register and color depth. The interesting subject matter is appealing and this sheet should find its way into anyone's collection who is interested in Luftwaffe aircraft or nightfighters in general. Check out the Owl website for more information and for their upcoming releases.
