The Messerschmitt Me 163 was unique in Second World War aircraft, as it was the only operational rocket fighter. As such an interesting type, it is understandable that several books have been written about the Me 163, but none cover the subject as completely as the Classic Publication set. This second volume details the operations of the Me 163 in squadron service, as well as the developmental projects and the ultimate end of the Me 163.

The authors of this two-volume set have done some careful research that is immediately apparent in the richly descriptive text. While the first volume dealt with the development of the Me 163, this volume starts out with the initial operations. It is here that the life of the Me 163 really gets interesting, and the authors enrich that history with many personal anecdotes from Luftwaffe personnel. This personal touch adds a dimension to the history of the Me 163 that is not often found in other texts.

Building on the excellent text are nearly 400 high quality photos, many of which have never been published before. These are a real boon for modelers, as it opens up many new and interesting subjects for your favorite Me 163 kit. Complementing the photos are many color profiles, drawn by Tom Tullis and done to his usual high standards. In addition to the standard Luftwaffe aircraft there are examples of captured aircraft, both in Soviet and RAF markings, as well as a chapter on the Japanese variant. Finally, the scale drawings presented include the requisite Me 163 drawings, as well as drawings of the rocket motor and many of the follow-on project designs.

Coupled with the first volume, this set is THE reference on the Messerschmitt Me 163. The well-written text, expansive collection of photos, detailed appendices, excellent color artwork and scale drawings make this a valuable resource for historians and modelers alike.

My thanks to Specialty Press for the review copy. Both Volume One and Volume Two are in stock, for $49.95 and $56.95, respectively. Check their website for these and other great titles in the Classic Publication series.
