Olimp 1/72 Curtiss Jenny
JN-4HG

By Chris Banyai-Riepl

Overview

Olimp has stormed onto the WWI scene with a series of very nice 1/72 Curtiss Jenny kits. This is the latest in their family. As it shares much in common with the other kits, I'll just gloss over the differences with this mark, and refer you to the nice build article of the first Olimp Jenny kit, the JN-4A/D, that Dennis Ugulano did for us.

The Kit

The basic differences for all of the Jenny kits are limited to the nose and turtledeck, and this kit is no different. The instructions have you remove the nose from the fuselage and replace it with a new piece that has a slightly different shape to the underside. The turtledeck on this release has a barrel shape on the rear cockpit to provide a solid mount for the gun. Aside from these two main differences, the kit is pretty much the same as the earlier releases, and should go together the same.

The Decals

The decals are the other difference in this release. Both options are for Jenny aircraft after World War One, the first of which is depicted on the boxtop. This plane is finished in overall khaki with a large white '500' on the fuselage sides. This is identified only as a gunnery trainer from 1919. The second option is finished in CDL on the fuselage, with khaki on the forward upper turtledeck and cowling. This plane carries a serial number on the rear fuselage and again is labeled as a gunnery trainer, this time from 1921. The decals are well printed and should pose no problem in application.

Conclusion

The Olimp Jenny kits are well worth having and fill an important niche in early aviation. I hope they continue to provide quality kits like these in the future. My thanks to Olimp to the review sample.
