The Journal of the Airplane 1920-1940

Great issue - as always; 84 pages of good stuff. It starts off with a long article on the Franklin Eaglet and PS-2 gliders focusing on Frank Hawk's 1930 flight across the US in the Texaco Eaglet towed by a Waco ASO. The article features 4 ½ pages of drawings by Warren Eberspacher. I was especially interested in this as we had a Franklin when I was a member of the Purdue University Glider Club back in 1951-55. Ours was a PS-2, as shown in the article, but the nose had been modified so that it did not have to be removed to enter and leave the cockpit; the cockpit opening had been enlarged to lower the sills to permit climbing over. Ours was doped aluminum overall with a green nose. Earlier this year Czech master Resins released kits of the Texaco Eaglet and the PS-2 gliders that are quite nice.

Part Two of Warren Eberspacher's article on the Stinson Model A trimotor follows featuring the planes of Delta Airlines, Central Airlines, Marquette Airlines and Airlines of Australia. Warren does this sort of thing properly for modelers - he always gives good color details and drawings.

I had never heard of the next featured airplane before, the Loening C4C/Keystone K-85 Air Yacht; a very nice looking boat hulled, biplane, amphibian with its single engine mounted on the top wing.

Oshkosh Airventure 2005 is covered in 14 pages of, mostly, photos.

A three page article of, mostly, photos shows the move of the Laird-Turner LTR-14 from the Paul E. Garber facility in Suitland, Maryland to the new Steven Udvar-Hazy facility of the NASM at Chantilly, Virginia. These photos are good reference material for modelers as the plane is out in the open, all by itself so that it can be seen.

The regular departments are here as usual: Models, Cockpits (Grumman XF2F-1), ID-UNK, Letters, Reviews and Wants & Disposals; all good stuff for aviation history enthusiasts and modelers.
