DRAW Decal Set 44-757-22 Icelandair New Colors 757-200s

Reviewed By Mike Egan

The Icelandair 757 sheet was a previous release in the DRAW Decal line-up. With the advent of the Digital Silk printing process, the powers that be at DRAW Decal have revisited this sheet to bring it up to current standards. The update includes additional registrations and names for aircraft that have been added to the fleet. Also, winglet logos are now included. The sheet will cover any of the -200s in the fleet, and two sheets can be combined to model a stretched -300.

This decal is intended for 1/144 Rolls-Royce-powered B757s, either the Minicraft kit or the Welsh kit. The instruction sheet provides a full color left side profile of the aircraft. The top half of the fuselage is painted white, while the vertical stabilizer and lower fuselage are dark blue. Standard Boeing gray is used for the wings and horizontal stabilizers. The engine nacelles will need to be painted yellow to match the yellow on the decal sheet. All markings and windows are included on the decal sheet. For those who build their models with clear windscreens, a clear cockpit windscreen with silver framing is included, in addition to the solid dark gray windscreen. As is now the DRAW Decal standard, the titles, windows, and door outlines are laid out on the decal sheet so as to be used as one complete piece, ensuring proper window, door, and title spacing. These decals, like previous ALPS-type decals, are printed on one continuous layer of clear carrier film, and thus, each decal element MUST be cut individually from the sheet prior to soaking in water. Unlike ALPS decals, the new Digital Silk decals are tough as nails. They do not scratch easily, and stand up to some very rough handling. They will also snuggle down nicely on the model.

The quality of the Digital Silk printing process can really be seen when comparing the original ALPS version of this sheet with the new Digital Silk one. The color saturation of the yellow tail logo is now outstanding. The shading from yellow to white is seamless, whereas on the older ALPS sheet, gradient lines in the color were readily apparent. The print quality of the smaller details, like the winglet and Rolls-Royce logos, is excellent. This decal shows the commitment to quality at DRAW Decal – as older sheets are converted to Digital Silk, time is taken to update and revise them. Special thanks to DRAW Decal for the review sample.
