Revell Germany Trabant 601S 1/24th scale Kit # 7334
By Carl Kietzke
Introduction
This is a plastic model of a plastic car: scale realism at its finest! The “Trabbi” was the East German “People’s Car” intended to be comparable to the Volkswagen Beetle. The Trabant was introduced in 1964 as an interim design, and production continued until 1990. It was built by VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerk Zwickau. The Communist Party tightly controlled availability of the car and as a result the Trabant maintained a 10-year purchase waiting list, which is unimaginable today. Over 2.8 million Trabants were built during its production life.
The Kit
The kits consists of 85 parts on three sprues. There was some damage to both the clear parts and to the body itself. This should be a relatively simple build as it a curbside kit with minimal detail.
Accuracy
The model scales out reasonably well compared to the data in the sales pamphlet included in the original release of this kit. It looks good, if a little rough.
Conclusion
If you want something truly different as far as a starting point for a unique Factory Replica, or something just plain odd for your collection, this would be it. The Trabant is scheduled for an August release, so there is plenty of time for research!
