Miniwing 1/144 Avro CF-100 Canuck

By Matt Bittner

Introduction

The Avro CF-100 Canuck was the only Canadian fighter aircraft to enter mass production. While it was designed as a fighter/interceptor, the "Clunk" (as it was affectionately known as) started service in 1950, and it wasn't until 1981 that it was struck off charge as a trainer and reconnaissance/electronic warfare aircraft.

The Kit

The Miniwing 1/144 Avro CF-100 Mk.3 Canuck consists of x pieces of cream-colored resin, one piece of round sprue (for a pitot and landing gear struts), one clear resin canopy and a decal sheet with two options: a "Clunk" of No.3 OUT, October, 1956; and a "Clunk" of No.445 Squadron. Both aircraft are all-over natural metal and the decals are ALPS-generated so care must be taken while handling.

The cockpit, like the Lansen, is a one-piece tub that after painting and applying the seat cushion/belt decals and instrument panel decals, can be put in place in the cockpit opening in the one-piece fuselage. Care must be taken when removing the wings from their pour blocks because Miniwing has provided a "slot and tab" method for gluing the wings to the fuselage. I would cut the pour block away, using the edge of the "tab" on the wing that slots into the fuselage, then sand the other away carefully. Now that the wings are removed from their pour blocks they can be glue to the fuselage. In addition, once the one-piece horizontal tail is slotted into the vertical tail, the nose cone, engine faces/nacelles, engine exhausts and wing-tip-tanks are in place, you can mask the canopy, glue it on and start painting.

Once painting is finished then glue on all the undercarriage pieces and you're ready for final detailing and finishing.

Conclusion

Another winner from Miniwing that will be a relatively quick build. Once the CF-100 is built it will look great sitting next to Miniwing's CF-105 "Arrow".

Many thanks to Miniwing for the review kit.
