Eduard 1/35 Sd.Kfz. 7 Engine Compartment

By Don Barry

Just in time to dress up the new Dragon 8 ton halftrack comes a new photo-etch set from Eduard. This is a generic set to detail the front end of the vehicle, and will work on any of the new Dragon releases of the Sd.Kfz. 7. This set has replacement hood side panels with press-out louvers, grill and radiator screens, firewall placards, knobs, braces, hinges for the hood, and various linkage bits. There is a total of 35 parts on one fret, many of which are double-etched, to show texture or different thicknesses. The hood side louvers need to be pressed out with a ball-point pen, or carefully lifted with a small chisel-edged blade. The grill and radiator screens are particularly fine, displaying incredibly tiny mesh openings, with no blemishes to be found.

This set exhibits the high standard of quality we have come to expect from Eduard photo-etched products. Eduard products are high grade, reasonably priced items that don’t expect you to cut off a lot of perfectly good detail, just to replace it with more good detail. They just supply the bits that should be separate, with more delicate, crisp detail than the plastic kits can provide. This set will further enhance what are already excellent kits, without costing an arm and a leg. We have been waiting since the early 70’s for new Sd.Kfz. 7 kits, and Eduard's PE set is extra frosting on an already delicious cake. This set comes highly recommended for builders with at least a little expertise in photo-etched application.

My sincere thanks to Eduard for providing this review sample. As a colleague recently said, happy modeling and may you starve the carpet monster.
