Eduard 1/35 Fern Leaves

By Chris Banyai-Riepl

Overview

Diorama accessories abound in the aftermarket world, but for the most part, plant life is left up to the modeler. Eduard is now challenging that belief with this interesting set of fern leaves.

The Parts

This is a very simple set, so simple in fact that there are no instructions. Nor are they needed, as the concept is quite simple: cut the fronds from the fret and position in your ground cover. Some careful bending of both the stems and the leaves will result in some great looking foliage.

The ferns themselves are nicely detailed, with one side featuring all the underside details, including representations of the rhizomes and sori found on ferns. The upper side has a blend of colors that provide different appearances for each frond. The variety as a result is large and will provide a realistic appearance. There are six 3-frond pieces, one 2-frond piece, and six single fronds. Mixing all of these up in different arrangements, your fern ground cover will look great.

By the way, while the set is labeled as 1/35, it would also work well for 1/32, so it could work for an aircraft diorama as well. For car modelers, these could be small house ferns in 1/24. Going the other direction, these could work in 1/72 as part of a 'Land of Giants' diorama, or perhaps a prehistoric display with a small-scale dinosaur. Possibilities abound once you think outside the box, and I hope Eduard continues this line with other plant life.

Conclusion

This is a great addition to a diorama accessory collection, and as noted it has a huge variety of uses. My thanks to Eduard for the review sample.
