Eduard 1/35 Sunflowers

By Chris Banyai-Riepl

Overview

Eduard continues to come out with some intriguing diorama accessory sets, and their latest set provides a bunch of tall sunflowers. This is one of the more complex sets, and it took me a little bit to figure out how it all goes together.

The Sunflowers

First off, this set is pre-painted and provides seven complete sunflower plants. These include the stalks with a bunch of leaves, as well as the sunflower itself. The stalk is the easy part, as all you have to do here is trim the part free from the fret and bend down the leaves. A bit of rolling of the leaves around a steel ball will help get the leaves looking realistic. Here Google can be of great use, as a quick image search on sunflowers shows quite a variation in how the leaves set. Sometimes they're pointing up, sometimes they're pointing down, but in general they're always pointing the same way.

For the flower, this is where the instructions are a bit vague. As these are pre-painted, and come in two parts, some kind of notation would be good as to how to stack these together. Also, while I am not sure how to do it, finding a way to dish the petals out would greatly improve the look of these. There is a separate center piece provided that is finished a bit differently from the one painted on the flower piece, allowing for some variation there as well.

Conclusion

When finished, these will look quite interesting, and could make for a good piece of visual filler in either a full diorama or a simple vignette. My thanks to Eduard for the review sample.
