Eduard 1/72 Spitfire Mk.I/Mk.IIa Photoetch

By Matt Bittner

Eduard's more complete set for the Airfix 1/72 Spitfire Mk.I/IIa - #73400 - consists not only of the same fret (and clear acetate with four gunsight lenses) as the Zoom set, but also contains another fret with more interior and exterior detail.

The Zoom fret is devoted to the cockpit and it includes a new instrument panel, compass, Sutton harness, rudder pedals, throttle quadrant, windscreen mirror, and map case. Additional parts include a new armored headrest, undercarriage lever, elevator trim wheel, camera gun master switch, radio remote controller and pressure heat heating switch.

The second fret contains more interior pieces including a complete seat, a complete rear bulkhead (plus seat support structure and armor plate) and a replacement cockpit door. This second fret also contains all the exterior pieces, such as replacement landing gear doors (once you carefully cut the plastic doors from the landing gear leg), a complete, lowered flap system, and other external pieces such as a new plate for where the antenna sits.

One aspect Eduard has been doing lately that will come in handy with the Airfix Spitfire is including templates on the site of the main photoetch fret so you can create lenses out of heated, clear sprue. The premise is once you heat the plastic you push the heated plastic through one of the templates, and it creates a nice, "tear-drop shaped" lens that can replace any kit item. On the Spitfire, this will work great on the light on the top of the fuselage spine (and which I used for my Spitfire PR Mk.IV conversion).

I'm very happy that Eduard has finally released a photoetch set for this excellent release from Airfix. I definitely want to thank Eduard for sending this set to review.
