Starfighter Decals 1/48 TBD-1 Devastators in War Paint

By Matt Bittner

Starfighter Decals' first foray into 1/48 scale is this sheet - 4801 - TBD-1 Devastators in War Paint, meant for the Monogram kit.  There are decals for the following schemes, the first two in overall Light Gray AN 602 while the rest have Light Gray uppers with Blue Gray M-485 Lowers:

  • VS-42 May 1941
  • VT-6 Mar 1941
  • VT-6 Oct 1941
  • Torpedo 6 Doolittle Raid Apr 1942
  • VT-2 May 1942 Battle of Coral Sea
  • VT-8 Feb 1942
  • Torpedo 8 Battle of Midway Jun 1942 T-14 Ens. G. Gay
  • Torpedo 8 Battle of Midway Jun 1942 T-16 Lt. Cde. J.C. Waldron

Decals are printed by Cartograf, are in register and look fantastic.  You'll need more insignia and stencil decals if you plan on doing more than two models from this sheet.  In addition, the only way you can do those two is if one aircraft you're finishing has the red dot in the middle of the star, while the other doesn't.  Starfighter includes one set of "red dot" insignia and one set of "not red dot" insignia.

For those looking for an alternative to the Monogram decals, and not wanting to finish their model with yellow wings, then you'll need these Starfighter Decals.

Our thanks to Starfighter Decals for the review set.
