A welcome reprint, this time in softcover format, is this newest title from Specialty Press. For those that missed this the first time around, this book focuses on the development and construction of the P-51, rather than the combat record. As a result, this book forms a great counterpoint to the existing library of Mustang references, which tend to focus on that operational history.

The book starts out with the prototype creation and development, with the first chapter devoted to this process. Next up comes a very detailed coverage of the Allison-engined P-51s, followed by the Merlin-engined Mustangs. Finally, the book ends with a look at the lightweight Mustang variants, ending with the P-51H. An appendix provides an overview of the individual variants and their specifications. Note that this book only covers the single-engined Mustangs; there is no coverage of the Twin Mustang here.

The text goes into detail on all the various systems found in the Mustang, while the photographs provide clear details throughout the development and construction process. The latter are quite impressive, as they are high quality and very sharp. Even if you are interested only in operational military P-51s, these photos provide details that are often covered up in military garb.

Overall this is a great addition to any Mustang library. My thanks to Specialty Press for the review copy.
