Faith, Hope and Charity: The Defense of Malta

By Stephen Tontoni

Author: Kenneth Poolman
Publisher: Crécy Publishing Ltd
ISBN: 9-780907-579632
MSRP: £7.99, $12.95

It includes 15 smallish black/white photographs in the middle of the book, nothing that appears very unusual.

The chapter breakdown is as follows:

The Pattern
Waiting for War
Gift Horses
Faith, Hope and Charity
'We'll Fix It'
The First To Go
Faith, Hope and Hurricanes
Faith
Postscript (to 1954 edition)

Although these chapter titles such as they are don't appear descriptive, the book is largely anecdotal, and almost entirely in chronological order. With that in mind, the chapter titles become meaningful.

This book is a second reprint; it was published in 1954 and 2004, with this being the 2009 edition. As mentioned earlier, the format of the book is largely anecdotal, and even incorporates some dialogue between pilots and various personalities. These conversations are almost certainly fictional, but mind if fun. You wouldn't consider it an academic history by any means, although it tells the story of the air defense of Malta (albeit via a limited perspective) in an accessible way.

I'd consider this more of an "entry-level" history book for a more casual observer, or a younger reader, versus a serious historian. As a value to the modeler, I'd say that is negligible.  My thanks to Casemate Publishing for the review copy.
