rocket.aero 2009 The newest title from rocket.aero is out, continuing their program of providing old footage in a new format. This time, the subject is the Convair B-58 Hustler, an impressive aircraft no matter how you look at it. Like others in the rocket.aero line, this title combines original footage from flight tests to Air Force PR films. The latter alone make this DVD worth the price, especially the “Champion of Champions” film, which covers the Bendix, Blériot, Thompson, McKay, and Harmon trophy wins. What makes this one stand out it that it begins with Jimmy Stewart climbing out of the cockpit of a B-58. A B-24 pilot during the Second World War, Stewart was a major supporter of the Strategic Air Command, and his passion for the branch plays out in this film. Other features include the first two flights of the B-58 program, as well as the first flight of the TB-58 trainer, coverage of air-launched ballistic missiles, the low altitude capabilities of the Hustler, and much more. As the original footage dates from fifty years ago, the quality is not the best, but rocket.aero is to be commended for preserving these films before they deteriorated any further. If the Hustler interests you, or if you are just a big Strategic Air Command aficionado, this is an excellent DVD to have. Visit the rocket.aero website for ordering information. My thanks to rocket.aero for the review copy. |
