Over the last few years, AJ Press issued a five-part series on the color and markings of Japanese tanks and, effectively, brought this exotic topic to a wider, non-Japanese speaking audience. Last year, they announced a hardbound edition on the same subject and, to this reviewer's excitement, have issued a stunning, hardbound edition with new information, photos, and color plates.

The authors provide a concise, yet very detailed narrative of the early days of Japanese armor markings during the 1930s and in China, continuing through the pacific War, and concluding with a treatment of homeland defense markings. They authors have collaborated closely with Japanese researchers and provide full translation of the intricacies of the Japanese language and breathe full life into some, otherwise, vague vehicle markings.

The real highlight of the tome are the color illustrations: nearly 200 unique pieces of color artwork showing a range of tanks and their markings. Apart from a few illustrations of amphibious tanks and self-propelled guns, the majority of these illustration were created just for this book. While most of the tanks follow a familiar green/khaki/brown scheme, the number of tactical markings worn on their hulls and turrets will leave the modeler with no lack of choice.

This book is beautiful and is an excellent companion to the earlier Tankpower series, which can still be sourced through your usual hobby outlets. I would imagine this hardbound volume will become highly collectible once its print run has finished.
