It's amazing what you can find at Boeing Field. Boeing seems to enjoy doing strange things to its airliners. On a cloudy day (a rarity in Seattle, I know) I came across this interesting plane. This particular example shows the modified 757 with the nose from the F-22 fighter on it. It is currently being used as a radar test platform for the F-22 program.
Like all Boeing projects, you can't walk up to the plane and take pictures. Instead, you have to rely on long lenses and shooting through a fence. This shot shows the right side of the converted 757. 757-1t.jpg (20603 bytes)
Here is a closer shot of the tail area. The registration number is mostly hidden, but you can make out what looks to be "N757" just under the wing. I'm guessing that there is more to it than that, though. The writing on the rear fuselage says "Boeing Defense and Space Group". 757-2t.jpg (23118 bytes)
Here is the front section, showing the F-22 nose. The word "Experimental" seems to be repeated behind both front doors, which is kind of odd. There is no other distinguishing marks, and if you hold your thumb over that nose, you would think it is just another 757. 757-3t.jpg (25122 bytes)
Here is a close-up of the nose. You can clearly see some sort of canard arrangement, and a sharply pointed nose with a chine arrangement similar to that of the SR-71. There is also something underneath the nose that could be a fin of some sort. I wish I could have taken pictures from another angle, but the position of this plane and others around it made this the only real vantage point. 757-4t.jpg (26283 bytes)
