Well, this book has been out for a while, but this is the first time I got to look at it, so it's new to me. And what a book it is. Once you get past the strange feel of the paper and start looking inside, you soon realize that this one book, with its meager 48 pages, is all you will ever need to build an accurate MiG-21 model. There are color pictures of the cockpits of the MiG-21F, MF, and UM, as well as color pictures of the undercarriage and other detail parts.
Black and white photos cover the entire aircraft (want to know what the inside of the nose looks like minus the radar and cone? It's in there...) Then to top it all off is a huge set of 1/72 drawings covering all of the variants and a set of drawings of the weapons carried. With the lack of Russian weapons out there, this last part will be very useful in scratchbuilding the required weapons for your MiG-21. Overall, this is an excellent book, filled with great pictures, and accompanied by both English and Czech text. If you find one, don't hesitate in getting it.

British Electric Corporation Lightning
Warpaint Series No. 14
Alan W. Hall
Hall Park Books, PO Box 1701 Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire MK 17 8YZ, 1998.
54pp
ISSN: 1363-0369
SRP: $26.95

With the new Airfix 1/48 kit on the Lightning there is sure to be a lot of new books on this subject, and the first new one across my desk is the latest in the Warpaint Series. The 54 pages contain 38 color pictures and 26 pages of color drawings, giving you one of the best references out there today. If you have nothing on the Lightning, this will be a great catch-all on this great fighter. For those of you out there that already have some stuff on the Lightning, though, the $26.95 price might be too much.

There are a full set of scale drawings and they are very fine. They cover everything from the PA.1 to the F.6, as well as the T.4/T.5. All are drawn by Ian Huntley and are up to his usual level of excellence. The color pictures give you some great Lightnings to look at. There is one picture showing 15 Lightnings lining up for take-off. I can imagine that the noise would have been incredible, and to watch all 15 take off and then go vertical, well....

There is one page with a listing of all the squadrons that flew the Lightning and all the serial numbers of those Lightnings. So if you want to model the entire flight line of No. 74 Squadron in 1972, you have your bases covered. The list also covers losses, as well as a list of surviving Lightnings, as of 1998. A page devoted to kits, decals, and parts is also included.

In short, this is an excellent book with lots of material for the Lightning afficianado. If you fall into that category, be sure to check this title out.

MiG-29 Fulcrum A, C
Zlinek No.2 Vol IV.

P.S. 8, 763 14 Zlin 12, Czech Republic, 1994.

ISSN: 1210-7433

There sure seems to be an awful lot of really good books coming out of the Czech Republic, and this one is no exception. The attention to detail in this volume is incredible, with the differences between the various MiG-29 variants outlined in both words and in a comprehensive set of scale drawings. The entire publication is in color, with lots of close-up pictures. The center section is filled with three view profile paintings showing the markings of MiG-29s in Czechoslovakia, Soviet Union, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Unified Germany, and the Ukraine, with lots of variation in colors and camouflage. The scale drawings cover 8 pages, and include a full page on the weapons of the MiG-29. There is also a page devoted to modeling the MiG-29, and the differences and corrections needed to make an accurate MiG-29 out of three popular models is given. This is another great publication on the stunning MiG-29, and should be in the library of anyone interested in Russian-designed aviation.
