Eduard 1/72 Spitfire Masks
By Matt Bittner
I have used the AML masks in the past and since they were vinyl was not impressed. Sure, one of the issues I had was my fault because I didn't prime first, but I still think if not careful the masks could have pulled up paint anyway. The other issue I had with the AML masks were definitely due to them being vinyl. Getting them to conform to complex shapes was next to impossible. I think that's where these masks from Eduard will be at a better advantage.
Since Eduard has been using the "yellow tape" for its masks these not only have a lower-tack, meaning they shouldn't pull up paint as much (but still do if you're not careful) but also since they're paper-based should conform better to complex shapes. Eduard has released both an 'A' (catalog #CX421) and a 'B' (catalog #CX425) scheme sets of masks. You receive two sheets in the package, one primarily for the fuselage, the other primarily for the wings. You'll want to spray the underside first and go from there since the sets do include "outline" masks for that aspect of the model.
These are great sets and with careful usage should be able to last a few 1/72 Spitfires. Not so with the AML masks as since they pulled paint off my Spitfire Mk.II LR and completely unusable for another model.
I definitely thank Eduard for not only creating these but also sending them in for review. I'm looking forward to giving them a try.
