RetroWings 1/144 Eduard Ju-52 Windows Strips
By Matt Bittner
Injected plastic is not that great of a medium when needing to produce something very thin. In 1/144, "normal" windows (and most canopies, etc.) are pretty thin so you can be sure that almost any clear piece in 1/144 will be out of scale. The way Eduard provides fuselage-side windows in their Ju-52 kit is a strip of clear that is inserted into long rectangle "holes" in the fuselage sides. You mask the windows prior to painting and the paint will take care of the areas "between" each window.
RetroWings comes to the rescue of dealing with these too-thick pieces. What they have done is provide strips of resin, with the "holes" for the windows already cut out that you glue to each part of the fuselage. To "form" the windows you use a liquid-type medium such as Kristal Kleer and fill in those "window holes". Not only will the windows now be more too-scale, but they'll also be better to see through, bringing out any interior detail you add to the Junkers. So if you're going all-out and adding Eduard's full interior photoetch to the Ju-52 now it will be easier to see.
An ingenious product to help produce a higher quality kit. My thanks to RetrokiT for sending this in for review.
