The Cold War was one marked by extensive observation of the other side, and entire fleets of aircraft were built purely to gather information. This new book from Hikoki Publications takes a detailed look at those RAF aircraft, from the early types in 1945 to the most advanced designs operating up to the end of the Cold War in 1990, with additional information on post-Cold War operations and aircraft.
The book follows the history of ELINT chronologically, starting with Avro Lancasters and Lincolns. Cooperation with the United States led to the use of Boeing Washingtons in the role of ELINT before the jet age caught up with the RAF and their adoption of the Canberra and Nimrod. In addition to these mainstream aircraft, the book also documents some of the lesser known types, such as the Shackleton and Varsity.
In addition to the aircraft, the book also details the operations of these ELINT aircraft. While one might assume most of these planes flew around northern Europe and the Baltic, they actually saw extensive operations throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Southwest Asia. Operations were against the Soviet Union and China, as well as their allies, and included maritime observations as well. This book builds on newly declassified materials to tell a very fascinating story.
In addition to the very interesting text, this book has what is likely the most comprehensive photo overview of the RAF's ELINT fleet over the years. Many of these aircraft were one-off types, with different sensor sets for different types of missions, and the photos help identify those variations. Also included are drawings and maps that help place equipment and locations.
This is a nice addition to any reference library on the Cold War, with lots of new information that will undoubtedly inspire. My thanks to Specialty Press for the review copy.
