The Messerschmitt Bf 109 is very likely the most documented fighter aircraft of the Second World War, with its service from start to end. While much attention has been given to the late-war Bf 109G/K and early Bf 109E, the middle child, the Bf 109F, is often overlooked. This is a pity, as the Bf 109F is probably the cleanest of 109 designs, with smoother curves over the Bf 109E and none of the scabbed on bulges of the Bf 109G. This new title from Mushroom Model Publications gives the Bf 109F its due, in typical Yellow Series fashion.
The Yellow Series covers the design and development of an aircraft, with a focus on variant differences and technical details. This book does just that with the Bf 109F, highlighting the subtle differences from the Bf 109F-1 through to the Bf 109F-8. As can be seen by that list, there are some variants that never went into production, highlighting the in-depth coverage of the type presented here. Throughout this variant section, extensive photographs and drawings, both from factory manuals and newly drawn features, complement the written text.
The second half of the book provides a very thorough and detailed photographic walkaround. This is broken down by airframe section, making it easy to find a specific area of interest. The photos are a combination of both period photos and shots of museum examples. Also in this section are the usual high quality color profile illustrations, which do a good job of highlighting the variety of camouflage & markings worn by the Bf 109F throughout its life.
This is a great addition to the Mushroom Model Publications Bf 109 coverage, and well worth picking up if Messerschmitts are your bailiwick. My thanks to Mushroom Model Publications for the review copy.
