Editorial

By Michael Benolkin

First off, we'd like to welcome aboard the newest member of the Internet Modeler editorial team: Mr. Dave Manter will assume the duties of Armor Editor and you've had the pleasure of reading some of his work in recent months, including the nice feature in this issue on preshading bare metal subjects using Alclad 2. Dave is a very accomplished modeler in armor as well as aircraft and figures (his 1/48 scale PBY Catalina was a recent cover article that also won top honors at the 2002 Mastercon). This JagdPanther is one example of some of the cool stuff that he and the armor team will be sharing with us in future issues. Once again Dave, welcome aboard!

A few months ago, we announced a new aftermarket company specializing in military vehicle subjects. What is significant is that the same people who produce the outstanding line of resin cockpits - Black Box - are also behind this new line, called TigerWerke. In our review of their first releases, we mentioned that sales of these products would be directly from the manufacturer, but at that time, their website was not yet operational. TigerWerke is now online.

On another topic, it is interesting (if not tragic) how the cause and effect of various industries impact the hobby industry. Such is the case with the dock strike on the west coast of the US. I was recently in San Diego and was amazed at the number of ships anchored off-shore and the idle docks. What has this to do with modeling? Plenty! Have you noticed Squadron Mail Order's website? Most of the new stuff is coming from Europe, with only a trickle of stuff from the Far East. Why? The Atlantic ports are open, but the Pacific ports are still closed. Many of the publications, Tamiya & Gunze paints, and all of the new releases are still stuck in cargo containers off-shore. You'll also see many other hobby supplies start to thin out on the shelves of your local hobby shop as many of these items are also produced in the Far East. Be patient with your hobby shops and let's hope this strike ends soon!
