Scale Quest Tamiya Thunderbolt Enhancement Set

By Michael Benolkin

A new aftermarket company has come online and their first detail set is an impressive one indeed. The company is Scale Quest and their first detail set is targeted for the Tamiya 1/48 P-47D Thunderbolt kit. What the developers of this set have done were to provide easy fixes for the few oversights or shortcuts that were left in the production model.

The first correction replaces the kit cowl flaps without any modifications. The resin part not only retains the outside detail found in the kit part, it adds the details found on the inside of real cowl flaps that were left blank in the kit.

The second set of parts replace the waste gate exhausts that were molded in the closed position (which in turn drives the supercharger with the full pressure coming from the engine exhaust manifold). Since it wasn’t recommended practice to run the superchargers on the ground (except on takeoff), these waste gates would more often be found open and this set provides replacements.

A replacement is also provided for the scoop mounted inside of the cowling bottom for the carburetor (supercharger) air as well as the oil coolers. This corrects the shape of the ducting and is a direct replacement for the kit part.

The set also provides a detailed oil cooler exhaust and duct to blank off that opening into the kit fuselage. Another set of ducts blank off the openings in the rear fuselage for the supercharger intercooler vents.

Elegant in its simplicity, this set will add additional realism to your Tamiya Thunderbolt without a bunch of work. You can obtain this set directly from Scale Quest by visiting their website at www.scalequest.com or contacting them directly at corsair13@compuall.net.
