Hauler 1/87 MB T-80 Rekordwagen

By Jacob Russell

The Mercedes-Benz Rekordwagen was a massive car. It was over 26 feet long and  weighed 2.7 metric tons. Its drag coefficent was 0.18 (VERY low for such an immense car) and it was projected to reach a speed in excess of 466 MPH (750 KH/M). The outset of World War II prevented the car from attempting to set a new Land Speed Record. It survived the War (minus the engine which was removed) and today it resides in The Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.

Hauler's kit of the V-12 powered, six wheeled Rekordwagen comes in a small end opening box with a photograph of the finished model on top. This is a 20 piece multimedia kit. 15 of these are resin, 4 are photo etched brass and 1 is vacuformed plastic (the cabin cover).

The body is a single piece of finely cast resin with a large casting stub to be removed with a saw. The body is well captured and accurately featureless (except for the covered wheel openings). This is a simple curbside kit and perhaps due its small size the kit only provides the bottom half of each of the 6 wheels. The PE parts include the steering wheel and a nameplate for the base (you get to make the base).

This is a neat little kit. It captures the car's proportions quite well and it will be an easy build. I recommend thiis kit and I would like to thank Hauler for the review sample.
