Brengun 1/48 Ki-61 II Kai Photoetch

Brengun 1/48 Ki-61 II Kai Photoetch

By JACOB RUSSELL

This photo etch set is for RS Model’s recent Kawasaki Ki-61-II Kai kit. It consists of 65 parts on a single fret, plus a small acetate sheet. Brengun gives you upgrades for many different areas of the airframe. For the cockpit you get a new instrument panel, rudder pedals, a new gunsight mount (plus clear faces for the gunsight), seat belts and sidewall consoles. For the landing gear there are new inner and outer gear doors, oleo scissors and brake lines. Additional enhancements include oil cooler faces, radiator door, new mounts for the drop tanks, an cockpit entry step, canopy handle, etc.

RS’s KI-61-II fills an important gap in 1/48th scale kits of Kawasaki’s inline-engined fighters from the Second World War. The limited-run nature of the kit means that some of the smaller parts lack the finesse one normally associates with mainstream kits made with metal molds. Brengun has come to the rescue with a photo etch set that addresses many of the RS kit’s shortcomings. I recommend this photo etch set and I would like to thank Brengun for the review sample.
